The story of our adventure in Spain

In October 2002 we purchased a holiday flat in Guardamar on Spain's Costa Blanca - not far from Alicante and Torrevieja and we try to spend a good part of the year in Spain.

This blog hopefully will contain our thoughts and impressions of Spain - the good and the bad and lots and lots of photographs of not only Guardamar but the rest of Spain as we eventually get to explore it.

Alicante - Walkway

This walkway is proving quite popular down in the port of Alicante . It was only opened late last year and you can get some fine views of the coast as you saunter along it.

Guardamar Hill - Some work needed

Some work needed here before this place can be considered ready for habitation ..

This photo was taken some time ago - I wonder if any further work has been done ?

Guardamar - the farm ??

I'm not sure how permanent this place is meant to be - is it a resting place when out working the farm ?

I hope the farmer has a better residence elsewhere - perhaps in the town centre.

Rojales - Time for a rest ..

OK you've walked around Rojales and now it's time to have a short rest - you'll find these seats near to the centre - sit and watch the world go by.

My World Tuesday -Alicante

Whenever we stay in Spain it's not long before we make our way into Alicante and end up at the harbour edge watching the boats sail by..

Sorry for the late entry - it's Friday now - well never mind ...

Rojales - Town Hall

The town hall in Rojales - looking somewhat like a big red box - must be modern !!

Rojales - A question

A question for which I do not know the answer - what does this statue represent ??

Some tale of adventure I think - bulls - dragons - maids in distress !!!

World Cup - South Africa - Spanish shock !!!

A shock for Spain this afternoon - they went down to Switzerland by one goal to nil - a goal scored by Gelson Fernandes in the 52nd minute.

Spain are one of the favourites to reach the final but now ??? No doubt the fans will be tearing their hair out in the bars all up and down the Costa Blanca.

My favourite to win is Germany who really impressed with their 4-0 win over Australia.

England are now looking good with their 1-1 draw against the USA ..

Rojales

Another dominant landmark in the centre of the town - I understand it is called the "Puente de Carlos III"

Rojales

This old building has been highly decorated and catches the eye as you wonder along - rather a dull day for our trip to Rojales so my pictures were not as bright and clear as I would want.

A cycle rally or race was taking place hence the cyclists.

Rojales - River Segura

The town centre of Rojales is dominated by the River Segura - here with a quite high level of water - the result of a wetter than normal winter.

Rojales

It's possible to walk from Guardamar to Rojales alongside the River Segura - the journey takes about an hour .

This is the sight that greets you as you enter the town ...

Ruin

This place stands in ruin not far from the N332 near to Santa Pola - the area is now a nature reserve - perhaps once a farm building but now surplus to requirements ??

The Bull

A famous symbol of Spain - you'll find these everywhere. Originally erected to advertise an alcoholic drink - sherry I think but I stand to be corrected on that ..

Someone has tried to attack this one with green paint.

Alicante - Getting ready !!

Down in Alicante's port it's nearly time for a show - lots of people running about setting up equipment.

We did not stay long enough to see what was going to happen - lots of pop music I would imagine ..

Alicante's castle standing proud above the city ...

Santa Pola - Las Casamatas

Casamata in English is pillbox.

No doubt built many years ago - perhaps to defend the salt works ?? I've no idea !

In the UK they are rapidly disappearing but here at Santa Pola this one has been preserved.

.

Alicante - Quiet corner

A quite corner of the old town - quiet early morning anyway - I'm not too sure about in the evening when I think it will be quite popular.

Santa Pola - Salt boat.

This relic was once a boat used in the salt trade - you'll find it on the coastal nature reserve at Santa Pola.

A reminder of times long gone ...

Santa Pola - Salt Salt Salt !!!

Santa Pola not far from Alicante is famous for the production of salt - this is sea salt obtained from the lagoons that surround the town.

Most of this salt will end up on the frozen roads of northern Europe ..
